We’re Live in 3,2,1…The Melting Pot of [PIAS] Artists Appearing Across International TV: A Recap.
Recently, we began to notice something pretty awesome – a whole bunch of [PIAS] artists have been gracing TV screens far and wide around the world. Father John Misty, Arlo Parks, Sofiane Pamart, Geese, Joan As Police Woman, Beach House, Katy J Pearson – the list goes on. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, 20h30 le dimanche, Later with Jools Holland, CBS Saturday Morning, Propaganda Live – yes, that list goes on too. We hope you caught some of these performances when they aired, but if not we’ve got you covered – after all, there has been quite a staggering amount to keep up with since the start of the year. So, here’s our round-up…
FATHER JOHN MISTY X THE TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JIMMY FALLON
Following the release of his fifth album, Chloë and the Next 20th Century, Father John Misty and his band delivered a gorgeous performance of ‘Kiss Me (I Loved You)’ from the collection on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
‘Kiss Me (I Loved You)’ followed the release of singles, ‘Funny Girl’, ‘Q4’, and ‘Goodbye Mr. Blue’ – the latter also being performed earlier in the year on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. You can watch that performance here.
Available now via Bella Union, Chloë and the Next 20th Century sees Josh Tillman and producer/multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Wilson resume their longtime collaboration, as well as Dave Cerminara’s return as engineer and mixer.
KATY J PEARSON X LATER WITH JOOLS HOLLAND
With less than one month to go until the release of her new album on Heavenly Recordings, Katy J Pearson appeared on Later with Jools Holland to perform ‘Talk Over Town’. Having marked the announcement of Sound of the Morning, the track attempts to make sense of her recent experiences, of “being Katy from Gloucester, but then being Katy J Pearson who’s this buzzy new artist.”
Written and recorded in late 2021, Katy’s latest effort is co-produced by Ali Chant (Yard Act and the helm of Katy’s debut Return) and Speedy Wunderground head-honcho Dan Carey (Fontaines D.C.) and is available to pre-order here.
ARLO PARKS X THE LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT
Days before this year’s GRAMMY Awards – at which Transgressive’s Arlo Parks was doubly nominated and presented fellow artists and musicians with multiple awards – the singer and songwriter performed her new single ‘Softly’ on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
The track presents a poppy and upbeat side to Arlo’s smooth sound juxtaposed with her tender lyrics about a relationship fizzling, with Arlo adding, “’Softly’ is a song about yearning, about how fragile you feel in the dying days of a relationship when you’re still desperately in love. The song is about how it feels to brace yourself before the blow of a break up and reminisce about the days where it all felt luminous.”
ARCHIVE X CULTUREBOX
Following the release of their twelfth album, Call To Arms & Angels, on their own Dangervisit label through [PIAS], south London collective Archive performed ‘Daytime Coma’ and ‘Everything’s Alright’ for Culturebox on national TV in France.
An epic yet haunting post-rock behemoth that builds and moves through its entirety, ‘Daytime Coma’ is unrelenting in its progression and represents the world as it was through 2020. Vocalist Dave Pen explains: “I pictured people in high-rise box apartments with small windows, nowhere to go, stuck indoors with the television and mindless junk transmitting through the glowing box. It’s kind of bleak I suppose, but there is hope at the end with the line… ‘I see a light in darkness, save me’. Because there always is a light, there has to be.” You can watch their performance of ‘Everything’s Alright’ here.
NILÜFER YANYA X THE TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JIMMY FALLON
Days after the release of her second album, PAINLESS via ATO Records, Nilüfer Yanya performed ‘midnight sun’ from the collection on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Sharing the meaning behind the track, Yanya says: “It’s a song about recognising what it feels like to be pushed down but wanting to resist.”
“I really like the imagery of ‘midnight sun’ as a lyric as it insinuates a light guiding you through darkness,” she continues. “The wings carry their own symbolism – freedom, lightness, flight, fantasy. If I could pick what people saw and heard it would be: seeing the beauty of confrontation and the necessity of rebellion.”
WARMDUSCHER X LATER WITH JOOLS HOLLAND
Warmduscher marked their arrival to Bella Union alongside the announcement of their fourth album, At The Hotspot, with the release of ‘Fatso’. Leading up to the physical release of the collection (pre-order here), the group performed the track on Later with Jools Holland.
Talking about ‘Fatso’, Clams Baker of the band said: “A song dedicated to taking the time to slow down and sniff the roses, turn off the computer and take in the sunshine, and embrace the battle of a sleepless day at the office from a night of beautiful carnage that you’ll always dream about.”
BEACH HOUSE X THE LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT
In May, Beach House appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to perform ‘Superstar’ as taken from their new album, Once Twice Melody (available now via Bella Union). Featuring eighteen tracks, presented in four chapters, Once Twice Melody is the first album produced entirely by Beach House – which seems to make the fact that the album was their first-ever to peak at #1 on Billboard’s Albums Sales Chart all that more special.
JOAN AS POLICE WOMAN X PROPAGANDA LIVE
In Italy, Joan As Police Woman (Play It Again Sam) performed ‘Get My Bearings’ on Propaganda Live. The track is taken from The Solution Is Restless, a joint album written and recorded by Joan As Police Woman, Dave Okumu of The Invisible, and legendary drummer Tony Allen shortly before he passed away.
On the track, Joan says: “‘Get My Bearings’, a duet with Damon Albarn, was written shortly after Tony’s death. It’s an evocation of the incredibly thin membrane between life and death. The idea of “mysticism” is the only way to describe it. My intellect cannot place death. It’s what floats beyond where the music resides.”
NATION OF LANGUAGE X THE LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT
New York City-based Nation of Language kicked off the year by making their late-night television debut with a performance of ‘Across That Fine Line’ on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
The track is taken from the band’s second album, A Way Forward (available now via Play It Again Sam), a ten-track collection that captures the trials and tribulations of modern life — from the simplest forms of human connection to surviving a world in which political corporate machines spew a stream of digital pollution through every device.
GEESE X THE LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT
Brooklyn’s Geese made their US network TV debut with a performance of ‘Low Era’ on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Taken from their nine-track collection, Projector, the track followed the release of their debut single, ‘Disco’, and marked their arrival to Play It Again Sam/Partisan Records.
The band says of ‘Low Era’: “We had been trying to get everything to sound super heavy, creepy-crawly, and complicated, really because that’s all we knew how to do. Four-on-the-floor songs like ‘Low Era’ had felt a little like poison to us for a while, until we consciously tried to challenge ourselves to write something more danceable. Once we stopped enforcing certain boundaries, it ended up working out without us expecting it to, and even ushered in this psychedelic 3-D element that ends up appearing throughout the album.”
SOFIANE PAMART X 20H30 LE DIMANCHE
In the lead-up to the release of his latest album, LETTER on Le Label, French pianist Sofiane Pamart appeared on 20h30 le dimanche across national TV in France. Watch his performance of ‘LOVE’ here. Romantic and delicate, the track illustrates the distance in love – the symbolic aspect of distance with detachment and the physical aspect, with absence.
LETTER serves as Pamart’s very special way of thanking all those who have followed his journey. As the album title suggests, the collection is a letter addressed directly to his audience – a ‘Thank You’ in the form of meaningful words, from an artist who usually only expresses himself through his piano notes.
NEAL FRANCES X CBS SATURDAY SESSIONS
Chicago singer, songwriter, and pianist Neal Francis made his national TV debut on CBS Saturday Sessions, performing ‘Can’t Stop The Rain’ and ‘Problems’ from his second album, In Plain Sight. Marking both his arrival to ATO Records, and the announcement of his album, ‘Can’t Stop The Rain’ features Grammy-winning guitarist Derek Trucks. “Even though life’s going to throw all this shit at you, there’s still so many things to be grateful for,” Francis says of the track.
CONFIDENCE MAN X LATER WITH JOOLS HOLLAND
Prepare to watch Confidence Man’s performance of their most epic, hands-up, euphoric anthem, ‘Holiday’. Following the release of their second album, TILT, the Heavenly Recordings-signed duo appeared on Later with Jools Holland. “No one tells Confidence Man what to do,” says Janet Planet. “Who said a Holiday can’t last forever? Spend big and live free, that’s our motto. And it can be yours too. A vacation is just sunburn at premium prices but a holiday is a state of mind.”
